Introduction to the Exceed NC by Joyetech
Joyetech has always catered to the beginner’s market, we only need to remember the hugely popular Joyetech Ego AIO that hit the shelves early 2016 which queened a clowder of copycats who pounced on the idea leading to a flood on the market of similar style devices around 6 months.
The Joyetech Exceed NC with NotchCore might just be another game changer. On the front of it, it’s just another pen style kit but with one jaw dropping twist it holds a semi-rebuildable deck aimed at beginners.
Let’s crack into this and see whether this trailblazing new kit is going to change the industries approach to beginners kits!

Quick Start Guide
When you first open the box you are provided with 2 x Notchcore Coils, pre-wicked with cotton.
Plug the coil into the deck. You do need to take care that it’s inserted properly. If you don’t line it up accurately the device will fail to fire when you switch it on and that could mean a waste of e-liquid if you need to empty it all to correct a mistake.
Once the coil is in screw the glass section of the tank back on
Fill with eliquid and leave to sit for 15 minutes. The top fill push open design makes this a one-handed breeze to refill.
If you are wicking this for the first time, I’d recommend watching a tutorial on youtube.
Unfortunately, Joyetech didn’t provide a tutorial to show this. I think that’s a mistake on their part as this device is aimed at beginners entering the rebuildable space. In a nutshell you will need to purchase vaping cotton, I used Cotton Bacon by Wick’n’Vape, cut the cotton to length and slip it through the coil and then put it together as normal.
Just keep in mind the length the cotton is with the pre-wicked coil and replicate.
There is only button that controls the two operational modes, but it’s really quite simple.
To change between direct output and constant voltage output:
- Click 5 times to power off
- Long press / hold the fire button down
- White = Direct output
- Orange = Constant voltage output
- Click 5 times to turn power back on
The LED Indicator and battery
To charge the device simply plug in the usb cable on the side device.
- 60 – 100% | Stay Lit
- 30 – 59% | Slowly flashes
- 10 – 29% |Moderately flashes
- 0 – 9% |Flashes in frequency
Design and Build Quality
Joyetech describe the look of the device as a strong ‘finely engraved’ cylindrical chassis.A bit of an over the top description for my Northern liking but it looks smart, the quality is very good and I like it.
There’s nothing ground breaking or flashy about the design, but it’s a grown up piece of kit and I’m all for vaping products looking and feeling like they are made for adults.
How Does the Joyetech Exceed NC Perform?
It performs just fine. Flavour isn’t sensational, nor is vapour production but it wasn’t entirely disappointing. I felt vaping it that I wanted a little bit ‘more’ – a bit more flavour, a bit more of a hit, a bit more power.
An easy fix, of course, was to simply put the tank on a different mod (if you have a VW mod) and ramp up the wattage to around 34-35watts and that gave me the ‘more’ I was looking for.
Wicking is easy but unforgiving, get the cotton slightly wrong – a little too much or not quite enough and you’ll suffer dry hits or flooding, beginners may find this tricky but not impossible after a few attempts.
As previously mentioned, having a pre-wicked coil is a good example of how your own wicked coil should look.
- Starter device for getting into rebuildables (does there need to be anymore pro’s?)
- Different output modes for the battery
- Light and ‘grown up’ design
- Re-wicking has to be spot on
- A tutorial on how to wick would be helpful
- Lacks power
- Average flavour and vapour from the coils
I don’t think the Joyetech Exceed NC is quite there yet, Joyetech’s pre-wicked coils lack flavour and the battery doesn’t have the oomph it needs and after a few chain vapes you are at risk of a dry hit but it’s a great idea and one that should be applauded in my view.
It’s a product that has me quite excited. Joyetech were brave enough to take a chance and it’s a shame there hasn’t been an awful lot of coverage discussing it. I wonder if that’s because many people are simply rolling their eyes at another pen style vape? It’s one to be considered seriously though.
